How to effectively help your teen transition from adolescence to adulthood

When a child is born, the world smiles while he/she cries. The joy of a parent is unmeasurable and incomprehensible. Every worry and fear disappear as soon as the cries of the baby is heard. The world is finally put into perspective and the loving warmth from the parents reinforces the existing bound.

As the child grows up, begins to walk and becomes curious about its environment, the meaning of parenthood starts taking shape. Parents are joyful and can only see the child for the angel he/she truly is: a true blessing.

When the child becomes a teenager, the narrative changes. “I do not think this child is mine. I strongly believe he was changed at birth,” a mother once told us about her troublesome son.
The teenage years also referred as adolescence is a period of confusion not only for the parents but also for the teenager. Physically he/she begins to change. While boys begin to notice an enlargement of their testicles and penises, girls start to have breast and menstrual. Both begin to notice the opposite sex and have wet dreams. Spiritually, they begin to question the existence of God. Socially, they both struggle for independence and control. Psychologically, they begin to question their feelings, behaviours and thoughts. If they are not well guided during this period, their behaviors can impact their decision making and well-being, and affect their transition towards adulthood. This can be a frustrating period for a parent. However, your prayers, presence, love, support and ability to listen can facilitate the transition.

Through our psychological counselling and coaching sessions, we equip parents to take their roles as influencers, supporters, teachers and primary mechanisms of socialization. We also help teenagers become more aware of themselves and manage themselves better.
Our Shifting Landscape (SL) training programme is a 9 months course, aimed at building the emotion, character and confidence of your teens, and get them ready for the work place. Available to young people between the ages of 14 to 20 years, the 9 modules will help your son/ daughter take off to the right altitude, because your teenager is still the angel he/she was at birth: a true blessing indeed.
