INTERNATIONAL LITERACY DAY

“Literacy is the bridge from misery to hope”- Kofi Annan.

Growing up, many of us were told by our parents to work hard in school to fulfil our dreams. Our parents sacrificed to get us the life they never had because they understood the importance of literacy.

Poverty and lack of opportunities are some of the most pressing issues that can be solved through literacy. Our survival and growth, as individuals and society, depend largely on one’s ability to read and write.

To bridge that gap, The United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) declared international literacy day in 1965, and celebrated it in 1966. ‘UNESCO, 2021’

The International literacy day takes place on September 8th every year, to remind the world of its importance and reaffirm literacy as a basic human right.

The main objective of this day is to bring hope to millions of men, women, and children who cannot read or write; and raise awareness on the danger of illiteracy for the current and next generation. While literacy describes one’s ability to read and write, Illiteracy is the inability to read or write.

Organizations, individuals and governments alike carry out various activities to celebrate this day, by donating books, financial resources and starting community libraries.

Nelson Mandela once said, “Education is the most powerful weapon with which you can change the world.”

According to a research by UNESCO publishers, the Kenya literacy rate for the year 2018 was 81.54%. If we are able to attain 85%, we will be able to fulfil the aspiration of the government and begin to dare, articulate and rise to the developed challenges of the 21st century. ‘countryeconomy, 2018’
