INTERNATIONAL LITERACY DAY: “TRANSFORMING LITERACY LEARNING SPACES.”

“Literacy is a bridge from misery to hope. It is a tool for daily life in modern society. It is a bulwark against poverty, and a building block of development. An essential complement to investments on dams, roads, clinics and factories.”- Kofi Annan

There is so much to say about literacy. Most of us, are in one way or the other, products of its outcome. Literacy is the ability to read and write. It provides the skills   knowledge, and empowerment needed to realize ones full potential.

In today’s world, digital literacy is the new norm. Technology has played a huge role in creating, navigating, sharing and evaluating information. While the benefits of digital literacy are many, it has also enhanced many threats-   privacy concerns and misinformation to name a few.

So much progress has occurred in many countries as far as literacy is concerned.  Nations and governments have emphasized and put in place measures to increase literacy levels and navigate ways to improve their education systems. Surprisingly, Illiteracy still remains a global problem. In modern day world, literacy is a human right. Try to imagine how you would maneuver your day to day life without reading and writing skills? What experiences, opportunities and dreams would have been shuttered down for you? While the progress may be something many people take for granted, literacy   dignifies and has significantly boosted personal development.

The international literacy day is celebrated on the 8th of September every year to raise awareness and concern for literacy problems that exist within   local communities , and globally, to remind the public of the importance of literacy as a matter of dignity and human rights, and to advance the literacy agenda towards a more literate and sustainable society.

This year, the theme for international literacy day is: “Transforming Literacy Learning Spaces.” It aims to examine the different existing learning spaces such as, online, classrooms, families and society and their effect on learning in order to build resilience and ensure equality and inclusive education for all. Even at a personal level, students and educators can be able to transform their learning spaces by  avoiding being in one space all the time, breaking the boredom and making use of different spaces be it the library, outdoor spaces, or even digital learning environments.

“Continuous learning is the minimum requirement for success in any field!”- Brian Tracy
